What to Expect When You Get a New AC Unit

Hooray! After much consideration, you’ve decided to purchase a new AC unit. You’ve picked out the right unit for your home, and even have an installation date scheduled. You can’t wait to feel the refreshing cool air in your home– but, you’re still not sure what to expect.

We don’t think installing your HVAC system should be a mystery, so here is a rundown on what you can expect before, during, and after your new AC unit is installed.

How Long Will It Take?

As far as installation time, you can expect that it will take about 4 to 6 hours to install a new AC unit. Most installations are completed within one day unless our designer specifies otherwise. Each installation has its own unique circumstances, just like your home, so it’s best to consult with your HVAC professional to get a clearer idea of how much time the job will take.

Preparing Your Home

There are a few things you can do to prepare for the installation process:

Move valuables such as antiques and/or irreplaceable objects to a safe location. You shouldn’t leave it up to the installers to move expensive items, nor do they want to be liable in case of any accidents.

IIf you have pets, move them to a safe, quiet location away from expected work areas. This is best for both your pets and the installation crew.

There are also several things that the installation crew will do to prepare your home before installing your new AC unit.

The installers will care for your home by laying down any necessary drop cloths or protective coverings in the areas they’ll be working on.

Installing the New AC Unit

Depending on the type of system, you may have equipment installed both inside and outside your home.

The components installed may include the inside air handler or evaporator, outside compressor or condensing unit, new refrigerant supply lines, thermostat, condensate drain lines, and the condensate pump when applicable.

Unforeseen Circumstances

While not typical, it is possible that the installation crew will discover unforeseen issues that need to be addressed in order to complete the installation. This could include replacing damaged ductwork, repairs that were not included in your estimate. While most HVAC contractors will do their best to anticipate all expenses in the initial estimate, there are things that cannot be assessed until the project has started.

Testing the New AC System

Once the AC unit has been installed, tests are performed before charging the system with new refrigerant. After a complete inspection of the new HVAC system, the refrigerant is added, the system is activated, and a final test is performed to ensure that all components, including the heat, are working properly.
